LATE MR. J S BETRABET
Late Mr. J S Betrabet

Innovator, Pioneer, Founder

Founder and late Chairman, Jaikrishna Shripad Betrabet was an innovator par excellence. His genius planted the seed of bio-degradable, eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors in India. His vision, zeal and inspiration have made the Suprabha Group what it is today. Mr. Betrabet started his career at Tata Chemicals in Mithapur, Gujarat, where as a mechanical engineer, he was involved with indigenously setting up infrastructure to double plant capacity. In his next job, with FAG Bearings, an Indo-Swiss venture, Mr. Betrabet once noticed an imported bearing wrapped in what looked like ordinary paper. What amazed the young engineer was that the bearing was rust-free, in spite of the fact that there was no coating of oil or grease on it. An analysis of the paper and a search for information on patents revealed that the paper was impregnated with corrosion inhibiting chemicals. In this paper, Mr. Betrabet saw the beginnings of his own vision of a rust-free India
Mr. Prabhakar Rao Bantwal

Mr. Prabhakar Rao Bantwal, Chairman & Managing Director is a C.A. turned Industrialist, and a well-known name in the field of Corrosion Prevention & Packaging.

Starting with a small team of just 8 people, Mr. Bantwal deep dived into the nitty gritty of Research & Development, Production, Testing, Marketing & Sales & Financial Accounting, training his hand-picked team of professionals from diverse backgrounds to lead his organization that was destined to grow in leaps and bounds under his leadership. At a time when Indian Industry was importing VCI Paper to pack their export consignments at an exorbitant cost and draining out precious foreign exchange, Mr. Bantwal introduced natural and organic VCI using Yantra – Mantra – Tantra Swadeshi which he made available to his customers at a very affordable price. Not only did this help Indian Industries save on corrosion costs, it also helped boost India’s reputation as the preferred source for top quality, corrosion free engineered goods. Mr. Bantwal has made it his mission to achieve a ‘Corrosion Mukt Bharat’ and to that end he has, along with his dedicated team of professionals, embarked on an awareness creation spree, educating the industry on the ways to mitigate corrosion.

Some of Mr. Bantwal’s significant contributions to the field of corrosion prevention in India are:

    • The concept of Life Cycle Protection i.e. mitigating corrosion that creeps in at every stage of production, right from raw material receipt through to final dispatch, transit and storage at customer end.
    • Natural Clay Based Desiccants that were developed as a replacement to the environmentally hazardous and commonly used Silica Gel.
    • Corrosion Audits that were conducted free of cost to help thousands of Indian companies identify the root cause of corrosion and overcome them.
    • Cost Effective Seaworthy Packaging Systems that have gained both national and international recognition in the form of IndiaStar Awards from the Indian Institute of Packaging, WorldStar Awards from World Packaging Organisation and AsiaStar Award from Asian Federation of Packaging. This system was used to pack the iconic ‘Make in India’ lion which was shipped on open deck to Hannover Messe, Germany where it was inaugurated by our Hon’ble P.M., Shri Narendra Modi, in 2015.
    • Treatment of entrapped atmosphere using a combination of natural clay-based desiccants and VCI desiccants.
    • Compostable VCI Film to mitigate the threat of plastic to the environment.
    • Compostable Coated High Strength Paper for heavy duty packing as an alternative to packaging plastic.

Mr. Bantwal believes that women are the pillars of society and has always laid emphasis on helping women become self-dependent. He embarked on a mission of Women Empowerment and Skill Development, setting up a Fabrication Section in his company that employs over 400 illiterate and semi-literate women from the villages surrounding his factory in Saswad. Here the women are trained in VCI bag cutting and bag making using modern tools and equipment. This initiative has improved the standard of living of hundreds of families in the surrounding villages, who can now afford a better lifestyle and education for their children.

Some of the major impacts of his work are:

    • Established India’s image as a reliable source for corrosion / rust free engineered goods.
    • Saved millions of dollars in foreign exchange.
    • Innovated cost-effective solutions for corrosion prevention that have helped thousands of micro and small enterprises become reputed organizations of stature.
    • Introduced natural products that are environment friendly and have extremely low carbon footprint.
    • Uplifted the economies of several impoverished villages by providing mass employment, specially to women and fostering their independent handling of finances.
    • Helped preserve Indian culture by identifying areas that need attention and garnered public support and support of other organizations in restoring them.
    • Helped several hundred economically under privileged students gain a good education by supporting them with sponsorship of school fees, uniforms and books.
    • Helped in upgrading of local schools, helping them to come to par with private institutions by identifying facilities that were lacking and providing the same, such as black boards, benches, computer labs, sponsoring teachers’ salaries, etc.
    • Gave a new lease of life to hundreds of under privileged female cancer patients by fully sponsoring their treatment.
    • Helped the Indian Government in the fight against COVID 19 by manufacturing and freely distributing quality PPE Kits to government hospitals, local administration, police and front-line workers.

Mr. Bantwal’s achievements & contributions to the business world are recognized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in India (ICAI) who conferred on him the prestigious CA Business Achiever – SME Award. He was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at RESPACK ‘24, by the Foundation for Innovative Packaging & Sustainability, one of India’s premier institutes that promotes Responsible Packaging.

His commitment to quality is acknowledged by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) who conferred on Suprabha the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards 2012.

Mr. Bantwal’s leadership is not restricted to his organization only. He has played a pivotal role in raising funds for various noble and charitable causes through the many charitable organizations he has been associated with through the years. Through his own trust, The Prabhakar Bantwal Foundation, he has actively worked for the upliftment of the economically backward sections of society, supporting local schools in providing education to children from financially poor backgrounds. A project that is very close to his heart is ‘Aapulki’, a school for Special Children in Wai, Satara, Maharashtra.

Mr. Bantwal has always led by example making him a charismatic and inspirational leader for his organization, a visionary leader in the business world and an enigmatic and benevolent leader in society.
